ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE MY PERSONALITY

Hi, my name is Esther Kim. I am 16 years old and I am currently in 11th grade in Korea International School. I have been and I am a diligent student. I work hard for all the assignments and assessments that I receive to do as well as I can on all of them because I do not want to regret later that I did not try my best for something. I can be described as a responsible person because I finish all my tasks on time in the best possible quality. As a student, in my opinion, studying laboriously is the fundamental responsibility. I never missed any homework during my entire high school career. For instance, I never turned my English homework or history homework late. I am passionate about pursuing certain studies such as economics and history. Moreover, I have much passion in studying various global issues such as poverty and water deficit. When I am doing something that I deem important, I am determined and unwavering. I persevere until I reach my goal. I use what I have to achieve my goals and resolve conflicts because I am a resourceful individual who is able to find clever solutions for disparate problems. I am not only determined but also, almost stubborn in some cases because I am prone to holding onto the principles that I personally view as rational and valuable. Hence, it is often difficult for others to persuade me on certain topics and my friends often tell me that I should be less stubborn in some situations. Since I have a set of principles that usually govern how I think or act, I am usually decisive. It does not take me a long time to make decisions unless they are extremely major decisions that will affect my entire life. For example, it did not take me a long time to choose my senior schedule because I was already quite sure about what I wanted to take. When making decisions, I am rather objective; I consider facts over emotions and experiences over mere thoughts and concepts. Referring back to the senior schedule example, when I am choosing courses, I think about whether I performed well in related courses in previous years instead of choosing classes based on the mere emotion of interest and curiosity. I am a realistic person who is far from being imaginative and daydreaming, Thus, I think about what is actual rather than what could come true. I do not enjoy indulging in fantasies because I think that they are mostly useless considering that the reality is vastly different from those reveries. Even when I am reading books, I do not enjoy fantasy novels because I see them as too unrealistic. I am usually quite skeptical as I do not believe everything that others say; I question many of others’ claims that are not proven because I am not naive enough to trust everyone. I am observant for what happens around me because I want to be aware of what is happening and how people around me are. I always watch for even the smallest details to get to know more about different things and people. Yet, I am seldom too futuristic because I want to be prepared for what is coming up. I hate to procrastinate and tend to do things ahead of time. Being futuristic, however, has some negative aspects in that anxiety about future events can stem me from taking new approaches or risks. Moreover, since I do not like to procrastinate, I sometimes become impatient to finish things way before they are due because I do not want to leave them until the last minute. The desire to complete tasks quickly instead of taking a long time to do them makes me an impatient person in certain situations.

In addition, I tend to be very meticulous because I do not want to make thoughtless mistakes. This meticulous nature of mine is often toiling because I often cannot bear even the seemingly most petty errors or flaws; I am very exacting when I am working on different tasks. For instance, I have to proof-read at least two times before turning in an assignment or assessment (such as a test or an essay) to make sure that I did not make any silly mistakes. I am sensitive to flaws and changes and consequently, I am not the kind of a person who likes to take risks and try new things. Since I want everything exact and precise, I am also very organized. I frequently cannot stand things becoming messy. As a result, all my school documents, locker, and even my room are very neat and well organized. In fact, I could not easily bear anything that was slanted or disorderly until a few years ago. Organizing things into different neat piles makes me to feel more comfortable. I am more independent than dependent because I think it is more efficient for oneself to do his or her own work. I usually do not want to rely on others because if other people do something for me, I would not be able to complete that task when I am alone without the aid of others. I honestly like individual assignments more than group assignments and even when I am working on group assignments, which can definitely be pleasurable, I tend to take a heavier workload because I do not want to merely rely on others to do everything. Although I want to be independent, I am modest regarding my accomplishments because I believe that arrogance leads to failure. From a young age, my parents constantly told me that I should never be overly self-satisfied and that I should remain humble. Following their words, I learned to stay modest and strive to achieve further instead of simply being overly satisfied with what I have.

When dealing with people, I cannot be very aboveboard and direct because I do not want to hurt their feelings. I am rather introverted because I am the type of person who chooses to remain reserved rather than to actively socialize. I am shy to new people and it takes me a period of time to be comfortable and accustomed to new people. However, once I become close to someone, I am caring and lively. I talk a lot with people who I have known for a long period of time. Even to those who I am not closely acquainted with, I am usually sympathetic because I think it is essential for people to help each other. I am likely to feel very compassionate and concerned especially towards the people who are suffering from inauspicious conditions. For example, I am actively involved in volunteer activities such as Habitat for Humanity to help people. I am rather generous in providing help for others; for instance, I enjoy helping other classmates on tasks that they are unsure about. Overall, I would love to get to know more about myself (personality and intelligence) throughout this portfolio assignment.
